Customize Your Diaper Cake to Fit Your Shower Theme
Diaper cakes can do double duty as a beautiful centerpiece for the shower table and as a practical gift for the mother-to-be. It isn’t really a cake that can be eaten, but is made out of disposable diapers and has little items for the baby tucked inside. You can also incorporate onesies, blankets, or any little thing that takes your fancy.
The cakes can come in one, two, three, or four tiers and look similar in form to wedding cakes. They can be trimmed in blue for boys, or pink for girls, or any color that matches the theme of your shower. You don’t need even need to stick with pastel colors as I’ve seen some really cute cakes that are trimmed in red (to match Elmo) or other bright colors (to match a nursery rhyme theme, for example). The top tier is usually topped with a small soft toy in colors coordinating to the rest of your cake.
After the shower, the mommy-to-be can set the cake in the nursery while waiting for the big birth day. After the baby arrives she’ll use the diapers one at a time from the cake. As she uses the diapers, she’ll discover the small useful baby items that have been tucked inside. It’s a little like a gift that just keeps giving and is so fun to unwrap.
If you’re the crafty type, you will probably enjoy making a diaper cake. If you aren’t the person giving the shower, you can tell the hostess that you are making a diaper cake and if she may use it for the table centerpiece. If she declines because she has a well-thought out theme she’s using or has an idea of her own for a centerpiece, you can still give it as a gift. Any mother would love it!
