Step-by-Step Diaper Cake Instructions
The following diaper cake instructions will show you in detail how to build your own diaper cake. Shop for all your baby cake ingredients before you begin. The Dollar Store has lots of cheap, but quality, items to hide in your cake. Assembling your diaper cake should take only a couple of hours.
Here's what you'll need in general:
• About 50 newborn diapers, you may need more or less, depending upon how tight you roll the diapers. • Rubber bands, you should buy a new package and not use the ink stained ones that you’ve kept from the newspapers delivered to you home. • A tall baby’s bottle, get one in colors that coordinate with the rest of the cake. • Ribbon – I used yellow and white curling ribbon that was about ½ inch wide. You can use any color that coordinates with your cake and any width that you like. It doesn’t even have to be curling ribbon. • Four receiving blankets. • A small stuffed animal or other item for the top of the cake. I used a set of rubber duckys. • Any small baby items that you like, such as pacifiers, baby brush, rattle, teether, baby lotion, etc. I used two pacifiers, four baby washcloths, a bib, 2 sets of newborn mittens, and a teether. • Diaper pins
Let's Make a Diaper Cake!
So to make the same diaper cake as shown above, here’s your short shopping list.
Shopping List • 50 or more newborn diapers • rubber bands • tall baby bottle • ribbons, in one or two colors • 4 receiving blankets • 4 baby washcloths • 2 sets of newborn mittens • toy for cake topper • miscellaneous items to tuck in the cake and to decorate with • 2 sets of diaper pins to pin the blankets together • cellophane to wrap the cake • twine or yarn • cellophane tape
1. Roll all the diapers up and secure each with a rubber band.
2. Take the baby bottle and arrange 6 to 8 rolled diapers, standing on end, around the bottle.
3. Cut a piece of string or yarn so it will go around all the diapers and bottle and tie securely.
4. Stack a second row of diapers around the core that you have just built and tie a string around it like you did before.
5. Build a third ring of diapers around this core and tie it with string as you did before. You now have the bottom tier built. If you have small items that you want to tuck into the cake, you can do that now.
6. Now for the second tier. Take a receiving blanket and fold it so it is the height of the diapers.
7. Wrap the blanket around the top of the baby bottle and secure with tape.
8. Arrange diapers around the outside of the blanket and tie with a piece of string or yarn to secure.
9. Now you’re ready for the top tier. Take one diaper and arrange 6 to 8 diapers around it and tie with yarn or string. I know this isn’t the best photo, but I hope you can get the idea. Then place it on the cake. Tuck in between the diapers any more small items you have.
10. Now you’re ready to decorate the cake! Fold two receiving blankets so that they are as wide as the diapers, as you did before.
11. The fourth receiving blanket might not fit all the way around the largest tier, so if it doesn’t fit, first fold it ‘kitty corner,’ or corner to corner first. This will make the blanket ‘longer’ so it can go around all the diapers. Then fold it to the width of the diapers.
