12. Wrap a blanket around the outside of each of the tiers. Use the one folded corner to corner on the bottom layer. Secure with a baby diaper pin. You can hide the pin by pinning all but the top layer of blanket together.

13. If you are using a bib or other small article of clothing, you can add it now. I used a bib on the bottom tier. You could put it on the second tier instead. Gently lift the above tier and smooth out the bib underneath as shown.

It should look like this when done with the bib.

14. Using the washcloths, you’ll make rosettes for the cake. Start by folding the washcloth in half, corner to corner, forming a triangle.

15. Wrap one edge of the triangle around your thumb as shown.

16. Roll the washcloth around your thumb, creating a bud.

17. Continue to wrap the remainder of the washcloth around your thumb and secure the other end with tape.

18. Finally, turn the edges of the washcloth to look like rose petals. You can secure them onto the bottom tier with pins (be careful to not puncture a diaper) or with cellophane tape.

19. Next you can make flowers with the newborn mittens.

20. Gently push the end of the mitten into the elastic band, crumpling the mitten end as you go. It will look like this when done. Arrange them on the second tier and secure them to the cake like you did the rosettes.

21. Put a curly ribbon around the neck of the toy, if desired. Set the toy on the top tier. Arrange the pacifiers with the flower mittens on the second tier. Tie ribbons around the top and middle tiers and add lots of curly ribbons.

22. For the final touch, and easy delivery, you can set the cake on a large sheet of cellophane, pull up the corners and secure with more curly ribbon. If using the diaper cake as a centerpiece you will want to remove the cellophane. If you are going to give as a gift, I would leave the cellophane on so the mommy-to-be can take it home without disturbing the decorations.
